Kavango independents vow 'no party influence'

Phillipus Josef
Independent candidates in the Kavango regions, preparing for November’s regional and local authority elections, say they want to drive development in their constituencies without interference from political parties.

Speaking to Namibian Sun last week, Frans Kanime, who is contesting the Kapako constituency, said the area had long been neglected.

“Our region is one of the poorest. Kavango, especially Kavango West, is the poorest region among Namibia’s 14,” he said.

Kanime added that a major concern in the region is that many residents lack national identification documents.

Kanime said this means many people are deprived of their right to access government grants.

He added that residents need guidance and support.

Kanime also highlighted a lack of infrastructure and basic services in the constituency.

“Development like roads, infrastructure, hospitals, clinics, electricity and potable water. There’s not even a single road connecting the inlands to the people living in rural areas. That’s why we need an independent person to handle these situations. Procurement should be done straightforwardly," he said.

"I do not want anyone to influence my work," Kanime added.

'I know the cries of our people'

Current Rundu Rural councillor, Paulus Mbangu, who is running as an independent for the second time, explained why he chose to leave party politics.

“I have decided to stand as an independent candidate in the upcoming regional and local authority elections because I know the cries of our people.

"For too long, services have been centralised, and communities are left waiting. I believe in the decentralisation of powers so that development reaches the ground where it is needed most," Mbangu told Namibian Sun.

"I know where services are lacking, and I am confident that with this vision, victory is certain."

Independent candidate Isdor Muronga said he is still registering and will release his manifesto once the process is [email protected]
