The Landless People's Movement (LPM) has announced it will not be participating in the upcoming Opuwo Rural Constituency by-election slated for 9 March.

The party has further urged all its members, supporters and sympathisers in the constituency to go out and vote for the Nudo candidate.

“The fact that LPM is not standing in the by-election of the Opuwo Rural Constituency should not demotivate our voters to go out and vote for the Nudo candidate, Kapukatua Kuvare,” LPM national spokesperson Sade Gawanas said in a statement.

“We believe in supporting our common causes and objectives; we are faced with the same problems, challenges and issues, irrespective of our affiliations. Our people deserve better services and opportunities for growth and development. “We therefor urge all our supporters to go out in numbers and vote for Nudo in the Opuwo Rural Constituency.”

The position of Opuwo Rural Constituency councillor became vacant after the resignation of Popular Democratic Movement (PDM) councillor Kazeongere Tjeundo, who contested for a seat in last year's National Assembly election.

Swapo vice-president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah launched the party's campaign for the Opuwo Rural by-election last Saturday by calling on voters to turn up in numbers to vote for the party's candidate Stein Katupa.

Nandi-Ndaitwah, at an event held at Otuvemba village outside Opuwo in the Kunene Region, also emphasised President Hage Geingob's call for introspection.

According to Nampa, she also singled out some of the developmental projects implemented at Opuwo under the Swapo-led government, such as electrification, conservancies and road construction, and mentioned that Opuwo was one constituency before it was divided into Opuwo Rural and Opuwo Urban, but the former is underdeveloped, compared to the developing pace of the latter.

She expressed her gratitude to the nation for giving Geingob and the party another mandate to lead the country's developmental agenda and promised that this would not be in vain, as the party will respond to citizens' pleas.
