Two learners died on Saturday morning on their way to the hostel at Maltahöhe after the vehicle in which they were transported overturned.

There were seven occupants in the vehicle, including the driver.

According to the police the accident occurred on the C14 gravel road about 29 km west of Maltahöhe.

A 23-year-old woman was driving the brown Toyota Land Cruiser, belonging to the N/a’an ku sê Lodge and Wildlife Sanctuary, from Kanaan Lodge to Maltahöhe when she lost control of the vehicle at a speed bump.

“As a result, the vehicle overturned and rolled three times and landed on its four wheels facing the direction it was travelling from.”

The deceased have been identified as 20-year-old Rianna Rooi and 13-year-old Maria Richter. Four other passengers sustained slight to serious injuries and were taken to the Maltahöhe clinic and transferred to the Mariental Hospital.

The CEO of the N/a’an ku sê Lodge and Wildlife Sanctuary, Dr Rudi van Vuuren, described the accident as tragic.

"Our lodge driver drove the vehicle with which the children and their families were driven to Maltahöhe. The children were taken back to the hostel because school starts today. The left rear tire burst and the vehicle hit a hump left by road grader and overturned.

"They have been working for us for years and when something like this happens, it really impacts a person,” he said.
