Spate of drownings in the Ohangwena Region
Four incidents of drowning were reported to the police in the Ohangwena Region in the space of four days, raising fears of more loss of life because of recent torrential rains and floodwater from Angola.
Wirbard Wilbard Amoolongo, 11, drowned while swimming in a water pan at Etambo village in the Epembe Constituency on Sunday afternoon. His body was recovered from the water yesterday morning.
Epembe Constituency councillor Johannes Nakwafila said the boy was looking after his parents’ cattle and drowned when he tried to swim in a nearby pond.
The police spokesman in the Ohangwena Region, Sergeant Kaume Itumba, said another drowning was reported after Omatunda village resident Peneyambeko Haufiku, 51, drowned in an oshana on Thursday.
Itumba said Haufiku was epileptic and might have suffered a seizure while crossing the Oshana, or she could have misjudged the depth of the water.
In another incident Hileni Atuhe Jesaya, aged two, drowned in a pond at Iikelo village, also in the Epembe Constituency, at around 17:00 on Friday. She had been in the company of other children who were herding goats near the pond.
Meanwhile Nampa has reported the drowning of 15-month-old Emilia Ndafelai Ndakolo in a pond at Etomba village in the Ondobe Constituency.
Her guardian had apparently left her home alone on Thursday at around 09:00 and she drowned while trying to follow her guardian.
