NYS celebrates value addition

The National Youth Service (NYS) centre at Rietfontein in the Otjozondjupa region celebrated its first-ever value addition to its locally produced maize and mahangu grains as well as to its beef.The Minister of Sport, Youth and National Service, Agnes Tjongarero together with her deputy Emma Kantema-Gaomas, NYS Board Chairperson Dr Emma Leonard and NYS commissioner, Dr Felix Musukubili formed part of the celebrations.Governors of Erongo and Ohangwena regions, Neville Andre Itope Walde Ndevashiya, respectively also attended the event which was dominated with drills and song performances.In her remarks, Tjongarero said since August this year, the NYS harvested its white and yellow maize as well as the mahangu grains from its fields situated at Rietfontein near Kombat and Omauni in the Ohangwena region.“It was during last month also when we invested resources to renovate our value addition factories where we now process our own produced maize, mahangu and meat,” she said.Tjongarero stated that the new and functional facilities at Rietfontein has so far processed white maize and mahangu grains into flour and also packaged it into bags.A total of four-tonnes of maize and mahangu grains were milled and packaged into 10 kilograms (kg) of more than 500 bags, while a one-tonne of beef was also cut, frozen and packaged into 250 boxes weighing four kg each.Tjongarero said about 324 trainees at the centre are now surviving from their produced and processed food.NYS on Saturday also donated part of its processed food to residents of Erongo Region who are hard hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, most especially resident of the former Twaloloka informal settlement whose shacks were gutted by fire on 26 July.Governor Itope received the donation and promised to distribute it to the beneficiaries. NYS executive for agriculture, Dr Gabriel Hangara mentioned that more than 700 livestock are still on the 1 600 hectares of the NYS farmlands at Rietfontein.He said a 30-hectare portion of the farmland would be dedicated for the cultivation of white maize. – Nampa
