N$10 million for NHE affordable housing
WINDHOEK - The National Housing Enterprise (NHE) has been allocated N$10 million for the 2020/21 financial year to deliver affordable houses countrywide.
This was announced by the minister of urban and rural development, Erastus Uutoni, in the National Assembly last week while motivating the over N$1 billion budget allocated to his ministry.
He said the ministry has identified various crucial programmes that need urgent attention, such as support to habitat and housing development, with over N$500 million allocated to the programme.
The Shack Dwellers Federation of Namibia will get N$5 million, with more support from the line ministry and ministry of works and transport in order to make state-funded houses priced at an affordable rate for targeted communities.
He added that around N$86 million is earmarked for rural development initiatives aimed at improving the livelihood of Namibians residing in these areas.
“A sum of N$12 million is earmarked to support self-help income and employment generating initiatives by rural communities,” Uutoni said.
He said N$28 million is to finance ongoing work at six rural development centres that are under construction - at Rupara in the Kavango West region, Masokotwane in Zambezi, Eembaxu in Ohangwena, Ogongo in Omusati, Snyfontein in //Kharas and Gibeon in the Hardap region. - Nampa
