Kavango West asked to make a living out of fisheries

RUNDU – The minister of fisheries and marine resources, Bernard Esau, has encouraged people in Kavango West to consider fisheries for investment or as a career.

Esau was speaking at the 2017 National Fish Consumption Day held at Nkurenkuru on Saturday.

National Fish Consumption Day should remind all Namibians that fisheries is an investment opportunity, Esau said.

“You can set up a fish shop and sell fish here at Nkurenkuru and elsewhere. Let us work with the ministry and the National Fish Consumption Promotion Trust (NFCPT) to enable our people to access fish for local trade and promote local enterprises,” he said.

Esau called on people of the region to invest in aquaculture and encouraged them to visit the ministry’s aquaculture centres to learn how they can invest in fish farming.

This, he added, is particularly important in Kavango West as there is access to sufficient water.

He also said people can dry fish, try other forms of value addition or work in fisheries logistics and other related services.

“You can apply for a right, when they are called, and participate directly in fishing. Our fisheries represent opportunities, let us work together to unlock those opportunities,” Esau said.

The minister further called on residents to protect the Kavango river fisheries, and stop illegal fishing and other destructive habits. - Nampa
