Family killed in crash after funeral
A family of four who were returning home from a funeral in South Africa were killed yesterday morning in yet another horrific accident on Namibia’s roads.
The accident occurred early yesterday morning about 50 km outside Okahandja as the Jansen family were returning to Grootfontein.
Alex Jansen (56), his wife Ragel Magrietta Jansen (53), their daughter Aunora Jansen (12), and a relative, Elizabeth Snyder (59) were all killed in the accident.
Their car collided head-on with a truck on the B1 road between Okahandja and Otjiwarongo at 06:30 yesterday.
Following behind their car was a bakkie carrying other family members returning from the funeral in South Africa.
According to the regional police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Maureen Mbeha, preliminary investigations indicate that the family’s car was on the wrong side of the road when the accident occurred.
All four occupants of the car died instantly, she said.
She said the bakkie following the car was some distance behind and did not see the accident happen.
The truck driver was unhurt.
According to Mbeha the accident occurred on a blind rise and although the truck driver tried to avoid the accident it was too late.
Mbeha said drivers should not overtake on blind spots and should keep to the left side of the road whether there are other vehicles on the road or not.
