The Council of Churches of Namibia (CCN) and Windhoek Ecumenical Forum (WEF) are launching a joint road-safety campaign.
The churches will collaborate with the Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund, the National Road Safety Council, the Private Sector Road Safety Forum and other role players for the campaign taking place under the theme 'Love Your Neighbour for Safer Roads'.
Speaking at a media conference in Windhoek on Tuesday, WEF chairperson Reverend Lorentz Kuzatjike said road safety was a shared responsibility, hence the church's decision to actively participate in awareness campaigns.
“The church is directly or indirectly involved when families go through trauma, physical injuries and death caused by road accidents by providing emotional, spiritual and physical support,” said Kuzatjike.
The campaign started yesterday and ends on 30 January 2018. It will include 'prayer walks' at various junctions, crossroads and other high-risk areas.
A prayer week will be held from 12 to 19 November in which different churches countrywide will engage in daily prayers for safer roads.
On 19 November, World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims will be commemorated with prayer walks at various junctions and crossroads.
The day is commemorated on the third Sunday of November each year to remember the millions of people killed and injured on the roads, together with their families, friends and many others who are also affected.
On 10 December, which is also commemorated worldwide as Human Rights Day, all churches countrywide will be mobilised to participate in prayer walks.
The effort comes after the MVA Fund call centre reported 3 399 motor vehicle accidents on national roads in which 625 people died from 1 January to 29 October this year.
