A seven-year-old girl went missing on Thursday after she was attacked by a crocodile when she went with her grandmother to fetch water from the Okavango River.

It was the third crocodile attack reported in the Kavango East Region this month.

The incident happened at around 19:00 at Bagani village in the Mukwe Constituency.

By the time of going to print, the police were still searching for girl's body, said Kavango East Police commander, Commissioner Johanna Ngondo.

Earlier this month, the body of a pensioner was found floating in the river at Shitemo village in the Ndonga Linena Constituency.

It is suspected that the woman, who was last seen going to fetch water, was attacked by a crocodile.

Last Monday, the body of a 31-year-old woman, identified as Monica Mayenga Shighongo, was found at Rudhiva village in the Mukwe Constituency.

In both cases, the bodies showed bite wounds.

Water scarcity

Many crocodile attacks happen when people go to the river to fetch water for household use.

This is necessitated by a lack of water infrastructure in the Kavango regions.
