Preparing Namibia’s youth for the workplace

Namibia’s workforce is changing rapidly, and preparing young people for employment requires more than academic qualifications. From my experience in education, TVET and industry, one of the biggest challenges is the gap between theoretical knowledge and practical application.Many young people graduate with qualifications but lack workplace experience, communication skills, problem-solving abilities, professionalism and confidence.Employers increasingly seek graduates who combine technical competence with soft skills, adaptability, teamwork, critical thinking, communication and a willingness to learn. Academic qualifications remain important, but practical experience is equally valuable. Internships, apprenticeships, work-integrated learning and industry-based projects allow young people to demonstrate that they can apply what they have learned in real-world situations.Educational institutions therefore need to strengthen their partnerships with industry. Employers should participate in curriculum development, provide workplace exposure, support practical projects and help institutions understand emerging skills requirements. Education should not only prepare students to pass examinations; it should prepare them to perform effectively in the workplace.Young professionals must also take responsibility for their own development. A common mistake is assuming that obtaining a qualification means learning is finished. The workplace requires continuous learning, humility, professionalism and adaptability. Young people should be willing to start small, gain experience, build networks and develop portfolios that demonstrate what they can actually do.Technology and artificial intelligence are also transforming employment. Digital literacy, AI awareness, data skills, creativity, critical thinking and problem-solving will become increasingly important. However, human skills such as leadership, communication, ethics, teamwork and empathy will remain essential.TVET has a particularly important role to play in addressing unemployment and developing Namibia’s skilled workforce. Namibia needs people who can build, manufacture, repair, operate, maintain and innovate. TVET can provide these practical competencies while also encouraging entrepreneurship.Ultimately, Namibia needs stronger collaboration between educators, employers, government and young professionals. We must move beyond producing job seekers and focus on developing skilled people who can create value, start businesses, solve problems and create employment. By connecting education, industry, technology and entrepreneurship, Namibia can build a workforce prepared not only for today’s jobs, but also for the opportunities of tomorrow.
