The NAMAs are back, and thinking bigger than just awards

After six years of silence, Namibia's biggest music celebration is ready to reclaim the spotlight. The Namibia Annual Music Awards (NAMAs) will return on 13 March 2027 in Windhoek, backed by a N$10 million budget, new leadership and an ambitious vision that extends far beyond one night of trophies and red-carpet glamour.Now operating under the Ministry of Education, Innovation, Youth, Sport, Arts and Culture, the revived awards are positioning themselves as a platform for industry development rather than simply recognition, with organisers placing economic opportunities for artists at the centre of the relaunch.Launching the awards at the National Theatre of Namibia on 5 August, minister Sanet Steenkamp praised the resilience of Namibian musicians, many of whom continued producing music despite the awards disappearing from the calendar for six years. "Just as we believe that excellence in education starts with strong foundations, we believe that excellence in the creative industry begins with recognising, nurturing and celebrating talent," she said. "Music reminds us that while we may sing in different languages and rhythms, we share one national story."More than a trophyFor organisers, the return of the NAMAs represents an opportunity to strengthen Namibia's music economy. Artists will compete across 23 entry categories and six honorary categories, with organisers promising significantly larger cash prizes than in previous editions. But perhaps the biggest shift is what happens after the awards.Plans are already underway for a national winners' tour that will take award-winning musicians beyond the stage and into communities across the country, giving audiences outside Windhoek the chance to experience Namibia's top performers while creating additional earning opportunities for artists."The aim is to ensure artists are sustained beyond one night of celebration. We want communities across the country to experience the incredible talent our musicians have to offer," NAMAs project administrator Tasneem Klazen said.This year's awards also reflect a changing music industry. Gender-specific categories, including Best Male Artist and Best Female Artist, have been removed in favour of single competitive categories. "We have removed the gender-specific categories because we believe music is for everyone. Whether you are male or female, we are all working towards the same award," organisers said. Fan favourites such as Song of the Year will once again be decided through public voting via SMS and online platforms after nominees are announced on 26 January 2027. Entries officially open on 10 August and close on 11 September 2026 through the NAMAs website. Genres including gospel, kwaito and Ma/Gaisa remain part of the awards programme, reflecting the diversity of Namibia's musical landscape. The relaunch also served as a moment of gratitude. Steenkamp acknowledged long-standing partners Mobile Telecommunications Limited (MTC) and the Namibia Broadcasting Corporation (NBC), alongside former sponsor Sanlam and the many individuals who worked behind the scenes to bring the awards back to life. Namibia National Theatre chairperson Manna Matswetu reserved his appreciation for the artists themselves. "To the musicians who kept creating, performing and sharing Namibian music throughout the six-year hiatus, thank you for keeping the industry alive and giving us something worth celebrating," he said. For many in the industry, the return of the NAMAs signals more than the comeback of an awards show. It reflects a renewed confidence in Namibia's creative economy, one that recognises music not only as culture, but as business, employment and national identity.If the organisers deliver on their promise, the biggest win won't be the trophies handed out next March. It will be creating an industry that continues to reward Namibian artists long after the stage lights fade.
