Woman in ‘constant pain’ pleads for help

Salonica Kamundanda (48) of Katutura Central is appealing for financial help after three abdominal operations left her in constant pain and unable to afford the support belt she needs.She has been waiting for corrective surgery since 2024 and says the pain, and the way it has upended her life, has led her to contemplate suicide.Kamundanda broke down in tears as she described the toll the condition has taken on her health, her daily life and her finances.“I cannot make ends meet and do not have money. I hope there is a good Samaritan that can help me,” she told Namibian Sun.Kamundanda’s first operation was in October 2024, followed by two more procedures that she says worsened her condition. A medical assessment at Katutura Intermediate Hospital on 28 August 2025 confirmed that she had developed a right para-umbilical incisional hernia following multiple abdominal surgeries.“I was supposed to get a belt. It's that same belt that I cannot afford. Someone bought for me a belt, but it didn't fit. It only managed to cover the top part of my belly. The government hospital doesn't have the belts,” she said.She also struggles to afford a suitable diet to control her weight because additional pressure on her abdomen makes the pain worse.Her condition has also affected her relationship with her family.“Even the people at home do not like me, including my own mother, who gave birth to me. She has even moved to Goreangab Dam,” Kamundanda said.Suicidal thoughtsKamundanda admitted that the pain once became so unbearable that she considered taking her own life.“I have been in pain ever since, to the point that I contemplated suicide, but someone stopped me,” she said.She says doctors have not given her a date for corrective surgery.
