NHE delivers 33 houses at a cost of N$10 million

The National Housing Enterprise (NHE) handed over 33 houses this week at Tsandi in the Omusati Region, valued at N$10 million.

NHE hailed the occasion as another milestone as the organisation strives to make home ownership possible, especially among middle-income earners.

Urban and rural development minister Erastus Uutoni praised local authorities working together with NHE to provide access to houses.

"It is a clear indication that the regional leadership, together with NHE, are dedicated to making the provision of housing possible," he said.

Affordability matters

Uutoni said rising housing costs prevent many people from accessing affordable housing and pleaded with stakeholders to assist NHE in providing affordable housing.

"It is only when the land is reasonably priced by the local authorities that low-income groups will subsequently be able to afford houses constructed by NHE," Uutoni stressed.

Uutoni further called on financial institutions to reduce their interest rates, warning that they are too high and NHE cannot borrow from them.

Win win for all

NHE board chairperson Toska Sem said by providing affordable housing to residents, local authorities will reap the benefits from the payment of rates and taxes.

Sem added that NHE’s priority is to raise capital to ensure that affordable housing is accessible to all Namibians.

"The market trends have changed, and we want to accommodate everyone walking into our doors seeking a roof,’" Sem emphasised.

The housing project was undertaken by Kambwa Trading CC, which finished construction two months earlier than scheduled.
