BREAKING: Drowning in Kavango River

A 14-year-old girl drowned in the Kavango River at Mabiye, near Rundu, on Saturday after being swept away by strong currents while fishing with five other girls.

Kavango East regional crime coordinator Deputy Commissioner Moses Simaho said the five girls managed to reach the shore and were rescued, but the victim disappeared in the water.

Her body was recovered around midday on Sunday, approximately 500 metres from where she disappeared, on the Angolan side of the river near the old crossing bridge to Calai.

Her body was taken to Rundu State Hospital mortuary for a post-mortem examination.
