N$8.5m medical equipment boost for healthcare from IUM

Elizabeth Kheibes
Health minister Dr Esperance Luvindao has praised the International University of Management (IUM) for its “generous and visionary” donation worth N$8.5 million in medical equipment to the ministry, saying it marks a significant milestone in Namibia’s pursuit of quality, accessible healthcare for all.

Speaking at the official handover ceremony in Windhoek last week, Luvindao said the donation “is not merely a collection of equipment; it is an investment in the health, the hope and the future of our people.”

She described the gesture as a “powerful demonstration” of IUM’s commitment to national development, adding that it strengthens the partnership between the university and the ministry in improving healthcare delivery.

“This act of generosity embodies the very essence of our memorandum of understanding with IUM,” the minister said. “It solidifies our shared commitment to capacitating our state hospitals, transforming them into centres of excellence that can deliver advanced, quality healthcare services to all Namibian people, regardless of their location or socio-economic status.”

Equitable health

Luvindao said the equipment will be allocated to Rundu State Hospital, where it will enhance the facility’s capacity to provide advanced care to communities in the northern and north-eastern regions.

“By reducing transfer distances for emergency cases, we can potentially save countless lives and ensure that those living in remote areas have access to the same level of care as those in urban centres,” she said.

Luvindao emphasised that the ministry faces “daunting challenges” in expanding and strengthening the healthcare system but is resolute in building a skilled and motivated workforce. She highlighted the ongoing implementation of the Ministerial Human Resource for Health Strategic Plan and Road Map 2030, which provides a framework for developing a sustainable and resilient health system.

“Namibia is entering a crucial phase in its journey toward achieving self-sufficiency in medical specialists,” she said. “This generous donation from IUM is a vital step in that direction.”
