Lüderitz mayor Brigitte Fredericks on Friday handed over N$21 000 in cash to seven schools in the harbour town for the purchase of uniforms, as well as a cash donation to two tertiary students pursuing higher education.

“For many families in our town, the cost of school uniforms presents a real challenge. A school uniform is more than just clothing, it represents dignity, equality, discipline and a sense of belonging," Fredericks said.

She said the donation will ensure that no child feels excluded or disadvantaged because of circumstances beyond their control.

"This assistance comes in the form of a very small amount due to our limited budget. We, however, pledge to reach out to you again later this year to do another donation,” she added.

Angra Pequena Senior Secondary School, Diaz Primary School, Lüderitz Blue School, Bright Start Montessori, Lüderitz Secondary School, Helene Van Rhijn Primary School and Nautilus Primary School each received N$2 500.

Kagiso Blaauw and Josef Diaz are being supported with N$2 000 each for further studies.

Shared commitment

The mayor emphasised that the gesture is more than just a ceremonial event.

“It is a reflection of our shared commitment as a local authority to invest in people, particularly in education, which remains the strongest foundation for sustainable development, social progress and economic empowerment. In doing so we are saying clearly and firmly: every child in Lüderitz deserves to learn with confidence and pride.”

Fredericks also announced support for two tertiary students. “You are the future professionals, leaders, innovators and changemakers of this town and our country. We understand that the journey to higher education is often accompanied by financial strain, uncertainty and sacrifice. Through this assistance, we want to ease that burden and send a clear message to you: your dreams matter, your education matters and Lüderitz believes in you,” she said.

The mayor encouraged learners and students to remain disciplined, focused and committed to excellence.

“With this support comes responsibility. Use this opportunity wisely. Let your hard work, integrity and determination be the return on this investment made in you.”

Fredericks also thanked parents, teachers and guardians for their continued guidance and support. “Education is a partnership and your role in shaping responsible, motivated young people cannot be overstated.”

The mayor reiterated her commitment through her office to initiatives that uplift the community and create opportunities for all, especially the youth.

“Together, through cooperation and shared purpose, we can build a Lüderitz where no child is left behind and where education opens doors to a brighter future. May this assistance inspire hope, determination and a renewed commitment to learning,” Fredericks said.
