Drought fodder stored at Reho Spa awaiting distribution

Augetto Graig
Social media has been abuzz since bags of livestock fodder were discovered at the Reho Spa in Rehoboth this past weekend.

Hardap governor Salomon April confirmed yesterday that the bags containing animal feed are intended to assist farmers in the Rehoboth area as part of government's drought relief programme.

Distribution of the bags is expected to begin in places like Rietoog in the coming days, he explained.

The 300 bags at the Reho Spa were reportedly part of 600 bags donated by Swapo to the governor’s office to help vulnerable Namibians survive during the drought – 300 bags have already been transported to Mariental, where they will be distributed to surrounding farms.

According to April, Swapo received the fodder from donors and decided to donate it to his office because they are already involved in the drought relief programme.

Rumours denied

April also denied claims that the fodder is intended only for Swapo supporters.

“The economy doesn’t ask which party you belong to,” he said, adding that beneficiaries who were pre-identified will benefit from it.

The acting CEO of the Rehoboth municipality, Ronald Windswaai, also confirmed yesterday that everything is in order.

He said the governor’s office had informed him in advance about the fodder bags and asked if they could be stored at the Reho Spa.

“The governor’s office heads disaster management, and we were expecting the shipment, but it arrived while the governor and the mayor were out of town. It was decided to store it there temporarily, although the official memo never arrived. As a town council, we need to support the government, and I spoke to the governor about it just yesterday,” he added.

The fodder has been stored at the currently vacant Reho Spa for nearly three weeks.
