A sombre cloud hung over the Kavango East region this past weekend, with four deaths reported in the latest police report.

Tragedy struck in Rundu’s Sikanduko location on Saturday when the body of 18-year-old Kupembona Markus Kandandu was discovered in a deep stream of water.

He had been missing since Wednesday after going bird hunting with a friend.

According to the friend, they were chased away from a local garden and the duo fled in different directions.

Kandandu is believed to have slipped and fallen into a deep stream, where his body remained submerged until it was found by his uncle during a days-long, family-led search.

Another fatal drowning took place on Friday afternoon in Shamundambo village in the Mukwe Constituency, where 11-year-old Kavamba Olavi Tuhupure is believed to have drowned while swimming in the river with other children.

His body had not been recovered at the time of reporting, and police search efforts are ongoing.

Authorities have once again urged parents and guardians to remain vigilant, especially near bodies of water, and reminded communities to report missing persons without delay.

Unexplained deaths

A 20-year-old man, Kashera Kangandi, collapsed and died on Saturday while walking to church with his 12-year-old cousin in the Ndiyona settlement.

According to the police, the two were on their way to seek prayers, as Kangandi had reportedly been feeling unwell. He asked to rest under a tree, where he began vomiting blood and died on the spot. He was declared dead upon arrival at the Nyangana hospital.

On Sunday at Gcude village in the Ndiyona area, the body of Alexander Moyo Moyo was discovered along a footpath to his family’s crop field.

The 52-year-old had reportedly left home at around 10:00. He was discovered by a group of children.

Police said there were no visible injuries or signs of foul play, and a post-mortem examination is pending.
