NHE propels housing development
In a recent development, the National Housing Enterprise (NHE) successfully concluded its Gobabis housing project, signalling a significant stride in addressing housing challenges for low to medium-income earners.
NHE’s manager of corporate communications & marketing Mutonga Matali shared details and outlined the organisation's plans aimed at furthering housing initiatives in the region.
Initiated in 2022, the Gobabis Project, with an investment exceeding N$25 million, has reached fruition. Comprising 65 housing units, including a mix of 49 one- to three-bedroom houses and 16 townhouses, the completed project is poised to make a positive impact on the local community.
Matali said that the allocation process for potential beneficiaries is underway. Furthermore, the project contributed significantly to the local economy by generating employment for over 150 Namibians during its construction phase.
Future developments
While no ongoing projects are currently underway in Gobabis, Rehoboth and Okahandja, Matali emphasised ongoing engagements with local authorities. These discussions aim to secure suitable land for future housing projects, showcasing the NHE's forward-thinking approach to addressing housing needs in multiple regions.
Addressing the challenge of land acquisition in specific towns, Matali expressed optimism about future initiatives, stating, “Once our engagements on land acquisition have been finalised, we will initiate projects in these towns”.
Meanwhile, the NHE has set its sights on Mariental, with plans to construct 34 houses.
“The tender process for contractor selection is expected to commence shortly, with construction slated to begin in the first quarter of 2024,” Matali said.
This expansion underscores the NHE's commitment to meeting the evolving housing needs of communities beyond Gobabis.
