Balcony Mix Africa pushes for music and cultural exchange

Wanderers Stadium will come alive on Saturday as South Africa’s Major League DJs bring Balcony Mix Africa to Windhoek for the second time, with the event promising more than just a night of music. Beyond the beats and high-energy performances, the platform is looking to create opportunities for Namibian talent and strengthen cultural exchange through music.Described as a journey through soul-stirring rhythms, the event celebrates African music, with genres such as three-step and amapiano taking centre stage. The line-up will be headlined by Major League DJs, alongside established acts such as DJ Maphorisa, Oscar Mbo, Sun-El Musician and Virgo Deep. Local DJs Kandy, DJ Erro and DJ Dreas will also feature on the line-up, in a deliberate effort to give Namibian talent a platform to reach wider audiences.“Co-signing a local artist, that is the long-term plan around the Balcony Mix in Namibia," said Lukas Nangolo, creative strategist at 27/10 Concepts, the team bringing the Balcony Mix Africa experience to Namibia. He said the ambition extends beyond hosting a successful event, with the team looking to make a lasting contribution to the local creative industry. True to this, Major League Djs posted a teaser of their remix of Ms Gideon's 'Tiki-Tak', solidifying the call for collaboration and developing the music exchange culture between Namibian and South African talent.“We want to upskill and grow the creative economy. We want people to know that the major league DJs are backing them as talent and as artists as well.“We believe that the Namibian talent is so phenomenal, we need to start giving them visibility”.Learn and engage As part of this vision, Balcony Mix Africa will host its first masterclass in Namibia on Saturday morning at the National Theatre of Namibia (NTN), from 10:00 to 12:00. The session will give aspiring musicians an opportunity to learn about the music business and industry while engaging with established industry figures, including Major League DJs.For Nangolo, the masterclass is a step towards building a more sustainable future for Namibia's music industry, with plans to expand the initiative in the coming years. “Next year, we want to grow it bigger. At the end of the day, we want to have a music academy in Namibia, managed by the major league DJs."Nangolo also expressed appreciation to those who supported the first Namibian edition of Balcony Mix and those who will be part of this year's experience, highlighting the broader economic opportunities that come with attracting international visitors to the country.“The bigger message is what the platform is doing. We are bringing in over 200 people from outside Namibia to be at Balcony Mix. Our database shows people coming from Botswana, Angola, Malawi. We have someone coming from Canada. The economy of the country is going to grow from the people we bring into the country through the Balcony Mix Experience."Informal to formalBalcony Mix Africa originated during the Covid-19 pandemic, when sibling duo Major League DJs began playing music mixes from their balcony, recording the sessions and sharing them on social media. What started as an informal way of connecting with audiences through music has since grown into a sought-after live experience, attracting music lovers and industry players across the continent.Today, the platform continues to celebrate African sounds while creating opportunities for artists to connect with new audiences. Its return to Windhoek signals not only another major music event on Namibia's entertainment calendar, but also an opportunity to strengthen the country's position within Africa's growing creative economy.
