Women and children haunted by violent weekend crime
Minors implicated in murder and rape cases
Police are investigating a case of double murder at Epako in the Omaheke Region following an incident involving a 13-year-old boy, a 26-year-old woman, and her two children.
The incident occurred at around 11:20 on Friday at a house in the road camp at the Epako settlement in the Gobabis district. According to the Namibian Police, an altercation broke out inside the house between the woman, Nacky Macthanisia Dalime Menatzick, and the boy.
Police reported that neighbours became concerned after hearing a disturbance and noticing that the door had been closed. The woman reportedly managed to get her six-year-old son out of the house to seek help.
When police returned to the scene with the child, they found the woman deceased and her three-year-old daughter, Delanie Esther Menatzick, critically injured. The child was rushed to Gobabis State Hospital, where she later died. The six-year-old boy received medical treatment for injuries at the Epako clinic.
The bodies were transported to the Gobabis state mortuary for post-mortem examinations. Police confirmed that an alleged weapon was recovered at the scene and that the suspect has been arrested. Investigations are ongoing.
Abandoned newborns rescued in separate incidents
In a separate matter, police are investigating two cases involving newborn babies who were found alive after being abandoned.
At around 07:00 on Friday, a baby girl believed to be one to two days old was discovered in a pit toilet at Olwiili settlement in the Okalongo constituency near Onandjaba. Police, assisted by community members, rescued the baby after responding to reports of crying.
The infant sustained injuries and was taken to the Okalongo Health Centre before being transferred to St Martin Hospital in Oshikuku for further treatment. The 23-year-old mother was arrested and is expected to appear in the Outapi Magistrate’s Court on charges related to the incident.
In Walvis Bay, another newborn baby girl was found alive in a plastic bag in an open area near the Kuisebmond police station at around 22:25 on Saturday. A member of the public alerted the police after hearing a baby crying.
The baby was taken to Walvis Bay State Hospital, and social workers from the Ministry of Gender Equality and Child Welfare were notified. Police are appealing to the public for information.
Teenager investigated for alleged sexual offence
In Mariental, police are investigating a case in which an 11-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted by a 16-year-old boy at Takarania location on Friday afternoon.
According to police, the girl was playing nearby when the suspect allegedly lured her into a house, where the incident is said to have occurred. The suspect has not yet been arrested, and investigations continue.
Unidentified woman found deceased
Meanwhile, the body of an unidentified woman believed to be in her late thirties was discovered early Sunday morning in a wooded area at Extension 7, Orwetoveni, Otjiwarongo.
Police said no visible injuries or signs of foul play were observed at the scene. The body was taken for a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death. Next of kin have not yet been identified.
