Vivo Energy Marathon ignites Vegkop
Road running
The Vivo Energy Marathon held in Windhoek on Saturday morning produced thrilling action as some of Namibia’s leading runners graced the event with their presence.
The event which saw athletes from all parts of the country flock to the Vegkop Stadium at Windhoek High School was staged in order to provide a platform for athletes to showcase their talent as well as those that just wanted to have a fun run.
Enock Haufiku, who beat Thatayaone Kelapile (second) and Tengeni Sakaria (third) in the men's marathon, said: “I am proud of being crowned the overall winner. I even had to run an extra kilometre because we took a wrong turn.
“My body was getting tired and I almost gave up then, but I had to chase the leaders who had taken the right route and I did that.”
Some veterans were also present to reminisce the golden days, with Ottillie Aimwata claiming overall first in the female marathon (2:59:04) ahead of former Olympians Alina Armas (second in 3:10:26) and Beata Naigambo (3:18:10).
