Smoking pensioner burns to death
News in short
Failure to put out a cigarette before falling asleep is suspected to be the cause of the death of Mushongo Lukas Mutaro (76), who burnt to death in his shack at Shighuru village.
According to Kavango East police crime coordinator, deputy commissioner Bonifatius Kanyetu, Mutaro locked himself inside his shack before he went to bed.
“While on his bed, he is suspected to have been smoking a cigarette and in that process he fell asleep,” he said, adding that the cigarette caused a blaze that set the room on fire.
“The deceased could not get out as at the time he woke up, the whole room was on fire, resulting in him burning to death,” Kanyetu said.
No foul play is suspected, but police investigations into the matter continue.
