Siblings burn to death in fire
Two siblings - aged three and four - died in a fire in the early hours of Thursday morning at Otjimanangombe village in the Ruacana constituency.
Omusati Region police crime investigations coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Moses Simaho, said Dhimbulukweni (3) and Welitemba Nampahethi (4) were asleep in a traditional hut with two other children when it caught fire and burnt down.
“Two children were burned beyond recognition, while two - aged six and nine - survived. The cause of the fire is unknown.”
He said a guardian was sleeping in a separate traditional hut and rushed to the children’s aid, but only managed to rescue two.
The six-year-old survived with no injuries, while the nine-year-old has been rushed Omonawatjihozu clinic and is in stable condition, waiting to be transferred to Outapi District Hospital, he added.
Simaho said the fire broke out around 03:00. Dhimbulukweni and Welitemba’s bodies have been transported to the Okahao police mortuary for postmortems.
Police investigations into the matter continue.
Parents urged to take precautions
The deputy commissioner urged all parents to make sure that any fire is put out before going to bed.
“We cannot stress this enough. The police do not want to see innocent lives lost in incidents which can be prevented.
“Investigations will continue as the cause of the fire remains unknown,” he said.
Woman burns down mother’s hut
Meanwhile, in a separate incident on Tuesday afternoon, a 29-year-old woman set fire to two thatched huts at her mother’s homestead at Okatenenge village.
Naango Johannes destroyed her mother’s personal property in the process. Her mother opened a case of domestic violence and said the destroyed huts are worth N$800.
Johannes appeared in the Outapi Magistrate’s Court, and her case has been postponed for a formal bail application.
