Short: Hit-and-run incident leaves Mondesa woman hospitalised

Staff Reporter
A female pedestrian was seriously injured in a hit-and-run incident that occurred around 17h20 on Saturday along Ondjamba Street near Hanganeni School in Mondesa.

According to police in Erongo, the victim, a 28-year-old woman, was struck by a white Toyota Hilux pickup while attempting to cross the road. Witnesses allege that the vehicle approached at high speed, despite the driver applying brakes, and ran over the pedestrian, who became stuck beneath the vehicle.

In a shocking turn of events, the driver allegedly reversed to release the victim and then fled the scene without offering assistance or reporting the incident, in violation of traffic laws.

The 28-year-old male suspect later turned himself in at the Mondesa Police Station, where he was arrested. He is expected to appear in the Swakopmund Magistrate’s Court today. The vehicle involved was traced and impounded after being found abandoned at the suspect’s residence.

The victim is currently receiving treatment at Swakopmund State Hospital, where she is reported to be in a serious but stable condition.

Police investigations into the matter are ongoing.
