President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah continued her swift pace of establishing her new government on Friday with the appointment of seven new regional governors.

At State House, Verna Sinimbo was sworn in as the new governor of the Kavango West region, along with Julius Hambyuka for Kavango East, Sacky Kathindi for Oshikoto, Vipuakuje Muharukua for Kunene, John ||Khmuseb for Otjozondjupa, Riaan Charles McNab for Hardap, and Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma Jr. for the Khomas region.

During the announcement, Nandi-Ndaitwah warned that any failure to implement her government’s policies and programmes would not be tolerated.

“I also don’t want to hear the public complaining about issues that you should be providing solutions for,” she said.

Furthermore, the president encouraged the new governors to collaborate with regional councils, local authorities, traditional leaders, churches, businesspeople, community leaders, and other stakeholders to contribute positively to regional development.

“I have chosen you from among many other equally capable Namibians because I believe you have the ability to deliver services efficiently to our people,” she stated.

Speaking on behalf of the newly appointed governors, Sinimbo said:

“We sincerely express our gratitude for the trust you have placed in us to lead our beloved country and, in particular, the regions where you have appointed us.”

Sinimbo replaces Sirkka Hausiku, who left her position as governor to join Namibia’s eighth National Assembly as a Member of Parliament.

Former governors of the Kunene and Hardap regions, Marius Sheya and Salomon April, respectively, have also become MPs, requiring them to relinquish their regional positions.

Similarly, James Uerikua, the former governor of the Otjozondjupa region, recently joined Parliament.

There is currently no certainty regarding the future of Bonifatius Wakudumo, the former governor of Kavango East, Penda ya Ndakolo, the former governor of Oshikoto, or Laura McLeod-Katjirua, the former governor of Khomas.

Khomas’s new governor, namesake and grandson of Namibia’s founding president, Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma Jr., also expressed his gratitude to the president for placing her trust in him to lead the region.

“I know we will have to start working soon,” he said, adding that development issues, including land and housing, would definitely be his priorities.

“There are a few matters that we have already been working on at the city council, and it will now be my duty to drive those issues forward at a national level,” he added.

Nujoma Jr. has been a member of Windhoek’s city council since 2020.

The governors of the remaining seven regions are currently: Aletta Fredericks for ||Kharas, Neville Andre Itope for Erongo, Erginus Endjala for Omusati, Elia Irimari for Oshana, Sebastian Ndeitunga for Ohangwena, Lawrence Sampofu for the Zambezi region, and Pijoo Nganate for Omaheke.
