Oshana police warn parents against fire accidents
As temperatures drop, the Namibian police have cautioned residents not make a fire inside their sleeping rooms or bedrooms. This after a two-year-old girl burned to death at Andambo Mbali village - situated near the Okau Kamasheshe village in the Oshana Region - on 6 June.
Community affairs officer, inspector Thomas Aiyambo, said the girl died in a bedroom constructed of corrugated iron sheets.
“It is alleged that the fire started while the child was left sleeping in the bedroom, while the domestic worker was out in the field harvesting mahangu,” he said.
He added that when neighbours and villagers arrived to put out the fire, the room had completely burned down and the little girl could not be saved.
“The cause of the fire is still unknown,” he said.
Monitor their movements
Aiyambo said although it is cold, it is extremely dangerous to make a fire inside a sleeping room, especially for children and the elderly.
“Children need protection at all times, against fire, water and dangerous objects like knives and pangas, and to not fall victim to rapists,” he said, adding that parents should not leave their children unattended.
He urged them to always monitor their little ones’ movement and know their whereabouts at all times.
