Man rescues woman from burning shack
Frans Petrus (28), a civilian from Swakopmund, risked his own life to rescue a woman who had fainted in a burning shack.
The incident took place on Wednesday night in Mondesa, Swakopmund.
According to Erongo police regional commander for community affairs, inspector Ileni Shapumba, it was reported that the woman had been sleeping when she was woken by shouts of warnings about a fire.
She went outside to investigate and saw that the shack at the back of her place was on fire.
She decided to quickly rush back inside her shack to try and save her belongings.
While she was inside, she inhaled too much smoke and fainted, Shapumba explained.
"When Petrus, a resident from the neighbourhood, arrived at the scene and heard people talking about a woman who had gone back inside her shack and had not yet returned, he decided to break into the shack through the window and managed to rescue her," Shapumba said.
Petrus sustained minor cuts from the broken glass on his right arm.
All ends well
Another man, Alfeus Hambangu, who had also arrived at the scene and decided to help put out the fire, also sustained minor injuries after he inhaled too much smoke, Shapumba said.
All three were rushed to Swakopmund State Hospital by E-Med Rescue Services for treatment.
They were treated and discharged.
Shapumba commended Petrus for his bravery and for risking his life and successfully rescuing one of the "country’s mothers."
"Our principled wish for him is that he remain forever strong and always acts in defence of law and morality in our communities," he said.
Fire fighters from the Swakopmund municipality responded and managed to extinguish the fire. The cause of the fire is unknown.
Police investigations continue.
