EDITORIAL: Prevention key to tackling GBV
Government deserves credit for expanding shelters and support services for survivors of gender-based violence and abused children. These interventions save lives and restore dignity. They show a state willing to act. But protection after the fact is not enough. The long-term task is prevention, which requires clear responsibility. Government must lead through policy and funding. The gender ministry should scale up prevention programmes, and the education ministry must integrate life skills, conflict resolution, and respect for gender into the curriculum from the primary level. The health ministry must expand mental health and trauma services, while law enforcement must ensure swift, visible consequences for perpetrators.
Communities and traditional leaders must confront harmful norms and silence around abuse. Churches and civil society must intensify awareness campaigns and support families in crisis. Parents carry the most critical role: raising boys and girls in environments grounded in respect, accountability and non-violence.
Gender-based violence may never be eliminated, but it can be significantly reduced. With coordinated action across institutions and households, Namibia can sharply reduce cases and build stronger, safer families over time.
