Editorial: Namra’s digital reform must now deliver smooth border trade
Namra deserves credit for pushing ahead with digital customs reform despite the inevitable difficulties that accompany major system transitions. The rollout of the ASYCUDAWorld platform represents an important step toward modernising customs operations, improving tax compliance and reducing paperwork and human interference in border processes. The sharp increase in processed customs entries suggests the system already has the potential to significantly improve operational efficiency and strengthen revenue collection. Those are important gains for a country seeking to position itself as a regional trade and logistics hub.
At the same time, the recent congestion at border posts showed that modernisation must be matched by smooth implementation. Truck drivers stranded for days and businesses affected by delays are reminders that technology alone cannot solve administrative challenges. Namra also deserves recognition for responding quickly by deploying technical teams to affected border posts and working to stabilise the system after the initial disruptions. Namibia should not retreat from digital reform. The focus now should be on refining the system, fixing weaknesses quickly and ensuring efficiency gains do not come at the cost of disruption, frustration and lost economic activity.
