Editorial: Namibia cannot allow intimidation to silence justice

Recent reports and growing concerns about threats directed at investigators, prosecutors, journalists and witnesses in Namibia should alarm the country before intimidation quietly becomes normalised within institutions responsible for protecting justice, defending democracy and maintaining public confidence in the rule of law.

The concerns come at a time when investigators, members of the media and individuals linked to sensitive criminal matters are increasingly reporting threats, harassment and intimidation connected to ongoing investigations and court processes, developments that risk creating an environment where fear slowly begins influencing how justice institutions operate.

Namibia should take such developments seriously because intimidation does not only target individuals, but also undermines the independence and confidence required for investigators, prosecutors and journalists to perform their duties fearlessly and professionally.

The greatest danger is that the damage often develops gradually through delayed investigations, growing self-censorship and declining public trust in institutions meant to protect society from criminality and abuse of power.

South Africa has already demonstrated how organised criminal pressure and intimidation can slowly erode confidence in the judiciary, law enforcement agencies and the media while making sensitive investigations increasingly difficult to pursue independently.
