Driver in deadly B2 crash denied bail

Adam Hartman
Ronnie Gaseb (37), the driver of the Volkswagen Jetta involved in the deadly head-on collision that killed five people – including an infant – near Wilhelmstal last week, appeared in the Karibib Magistrate’s Court yesterday.

He is facing five counts of culpable homicide, one count of driving under the influence and one count of driving without a valid driver’s licence.

Gaseb was discharged from Usakos State Hospital on Friday, alongside a four-year-old child who also survived the accident. Upon his release, Gaseb was taken into custody at the Karibib Police Station after allegedly testing positive for alcohol following the crash.

Tragic crash

The collision occurred last Thursday afternoon, approximately 50 kilometres from Karibib on the B2 road towards Okahandja. According to police, Gaseb was driving the Jetta from Usakos towards Okahandja when it collided with a red Nissan Sanny heading in the opposite direction.

The Nissan caught fire and was burned beyond repair.

All three occupants – Eddie van der Merwe, Linda van der Merwe and Fritz Brand, all from Usakos – died.

Gaseb’s vehicle, carrying five occupants including two minors, overturned and landed on its roof. Naftalie Ricky Brukeni (38) of Karibib died at the scene. A six-month-old baby, also from Karibib, was transported to Karibib Clinic by private vehicle but was later declared dead.

The three remaining occupants of the Jetta, including Gaseb, sustained serious injuries and were treated at Usakos State Hospital.

Gaseb remains in custody and is expected to reappear in court in mid-July.
