Bail granted in suspected Walvis Bay drunk driving incident

A 42-year-old man accused of driving under the influence and seriously injuring a cyclist in Walvis Bay last Thursday has been granted N$8 000 bail.

According to Erongo police spokesperson Senior Inspector Judith Shomungula, the incident occurred at around 03:00, at the corner of Paul Vincent and Esplanade Road.

“It is suspected that the suspect drove a vehicle whilst under the influence of alcohol," she explained, and subsequently hit the cyclist. He also failed to "provide the breath specimen".

The cyclist, identified as Reo Burger, sustained serious injuries and is currently in a critical condition at Welwitschia Private Hospital.

Free

The suspect, Petrus Geldenhuys, was arrested on charges of reckless and/or negligent driving, failure to provide a specimen of breath, and driving under the influence of alcohol.

Geldenhuys appeared before the Walvis Bay Magistrate’s Court on Friday, 20 June, and was granted bail. The matter has been postponed to 3 July. Police investigations continue.

Burger’s family has expressed concern over how the incident was handled, alleging that the scene was cleared before police could properly assess the circumstances of the crash.
