Ombudsman wants govt to enhance child protection

Elizabeth Joseph
Ombudsman Basilius Dyakugha wants government to strengthen the legal framework to protect children.

He said this during the commemoration of the Day of the African Child yesterday.

This year’s global event took place under the theme: ‘Eliminating Harmful Practices Affecting Children: Progress on Policy and Practice Since 2013’.

Dyakugha said the harmful practices should be rooted out completely.

His office joins all stakeholders in Namibia in condemning awful crimes perpetrated against Namibian children, including rape, he added.

"The Ombudsman's office calls upon all Namibians, especially the parents of children who are in schools, to focus their attention on this day; on the barriers the African children face in pursuit of quality education."

Strengthen the framework

Dyakugha said he recognises the importance of the Day of the African Child as an advocacy tool for enhancing the rights and welfare of African children.

"Today, most education in Africa is a combination of both intellectual and manual labour, which imparts skills that should be put to immediate use in the respective communities," he said.

The ombudsman said is office is deeply concerned about the harmful traditional and cultural practices on the African continent and thus called upon governments to strengthen the legal framework to protect children from such practices.

"Children belong in school, in terms of Article 20 of the Namibian Constitution, and all harmful practices that hinder African children from reaching their true potential should be eliminated."
