MTC raises N$1.4 million lifeline for young businesses

Elizabeth Joseph
MTC and partners have raised just over N$1.4 million through its ‘We Race Together’ initiative.

The company announced this achievement over the weekend, adding that the project is being done in partnership with Bank Windhoek, the Business and Intellectual Property Authority, Namport, and NamPower, among others.

The money was raised in May to assist young businesses in the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and horticulture sectors with start-up capital.

The telecommunications giant has called for proposal submissions, which will close on 13 September.

Better lives

"This initiative has started to improve livelihoods in the areas of food security and small, medium enterprise youth empowerment,” the company said.

According to MTC, its primary objective with the project is to raise funds that will be channelled toward social welfare causes to improve the living conditions of Namibians.

MTC spokesperson, Fikameni Mathias, said the company encourages TVET graduates, especially those who are struggling to make ends meet, to apply for grants to start their businesses.

“These grants are aimed to support unemployed youth between the ages 18 to 35 who have a TVET qualification, but cannot make ends meet because they do not have the equipment to start up their small businesses,” he said.

“We are aware of young graduates who graduated from technical and vocational centres but who cannot be absorbed by the market. Grants will be used to procure at least 70 start-up equipment grants for unemployed graduates,” Mathias said.

Better start

In addition, the money will boost the horticulture industry with grants aimed to support the establishment of planned community garden projects, assist already existing gardening projects for the benefit of an identified community.

Detailed proposals with an explicit budget, equipment quotation, and complying project outcomes can be sent to [email protected] on or before 13 September.
