Southern dams surge amid ongoing rainfall
After the sluice gates of the Naute Dam near Keetmanshoop were opened over the weekend, when it reached 107% capacity, they were closed on Sunday at 02:40, when the dam level stood at 99.3%.
According to NamWater’s dam bulletin, the dam received a further inflow of 8.963 cubic metres of water, with the level on Monday recorded at 106.3%.
The Neckartal Dam was still overflowing on Monday, with its level at 101.9% and an inflow of 4.003 cubic metres.
The Hardap Dam recorded the highest inflow of 13.753 cubic metres, with its level at 62.1% on Monday.
Other dams in the south that recorded inflows included the Oanob Dam, with its level at 60.5%, and the Bondels Dam at 7.5%, bringing the southern dams’ combined level to 90.8%.
In the central region, the Swakoppoort Dam recorded an inflow of 1.335 cubic metres, with its level at 82.0%, while the Von Bach Dam is now 70.8% full after an inflow of 0.548 cubic metres.
Rainfall is continuing, with the Windhoek weather office issuing another warning for moderate to heavy thunderstorms and rain expected in parts of the central northern, central and south-eastern regions, as well as Otjozondjupa and Omaheke, where flash flooding may occur.
Elsewhere inland, isolated thundershowers and rain are expected, except in the far south-west and south.
