Widespread rain lifts spirits and dam levels

A wet Christmas for a grateful Namibia

Heavy rain swept across parts of Namibia over the past week, delivering timely Christmas joy, with more showers forecast for today and tomorrow.

In Windhoek, the weather service AccuWeather predicts about 9.6 mm of rain for Christmas Eve and 3.3 mm for Christmas Day. In Okahandja, where Claudette Thorburn Coertzen reported 22 mm of rain on Monday on the Facebook page Namibië Reën/Weer, and the Kadila poultry farm outside town received 45 mm, a further 4.3 mm is expected today and 1.8 mm tomorrow.

On Sonnleiten farm near Hosea Kutako International Airport, 55 mm of rain has fallen. At Seeis, less than 20km from the airport, 1mm is forecast for both today and tomorrow.

At Ombujomenge, ten kilometres west of Wilhelmstal, 14 mm of rain was recorded from 20:00 on Monday evening. The Wilhelmstal area is expected to receive 2.8 mm today.

Bergen farm, south-east of Tsumeb, recorded 18 mm of rain. Tsumeb is expected to receive 2.1 mm today.

Dassiesfontein, about 35 km west of Mariental, recorded 13 mm of rain, while Mariental is expected to receive a further 1.5 mm on Christmas Day.

At Pietersville, roughly 40 km south of Stampriet, Jandré Botha measured 52 mm.

Dams

According to NamWater, the Neckartal Dam is now 97.7% full, up from 77% at the end of the previous rainy season.

The Hardap Dam has risen sharply from 5.5% last season to 57.3% as of Monday, 22 December.

Water levels at the Naute Dam increased from 30.9% to 81.9% over the same period, while the Oanob Dam climbed from 31.1% last rainy season to 62.5% on Monday.

The Von Bach Dam, which stood at just 10.4% at the end of the previous rainy season, has recovered to 82%.
