JUST IN: First day of meteorological winter
Today is the first day of the meteorological winter in the southern hemisphere.
According to AfriWX, an independent weather interest website, the astronomical winter, however, will start on the Winter Solstice on 21 June, which also marks our shortest day and longest night of 2023.
The meteorological winter will end on 31 August, while the astronomical winter ends on 23 September.
The two differ because the astronomical seasons are based on the position of the earth in relation to the sun, whereas the metrological seasons are based on the annual temperature cycle.
