Namibian tourism heroes honoured
The Gondwana Collection recently honoured three tourism heroes: Mariane Akwenye, Toni Hart and Matheus Washinana were recognised for their efforts in promoting sustainable and safe tourism in the country.
As Gondwana reported, Akwenye assisted a Swiss couple stranded with a flat tyre in the remote area of Sesriem during their four-week exploration of the country.
Akwenye suggested driving one of the travellers to the nearest town, Rehoboth, but the initially identified tyre repair workshop was non-existent.
"Mariane quickly adapted to the situation and suggested driving to Windhoek to provide a greater variety of options. Despite the challenges, Mariane's proactive approach ensured that the stranded tourist not only got new tyres but also safely reunited with their partner after a 10-hour journey," said Gondwana."
Dedicated to a better Namibia
Hart was also honoured for her dedicated efforts in promoting sustainable tourism in Namibia. Gondwana explained that Hart, who holds a national diploma in natural resource management, has served in various roles at Wilderness Safaris Namibia.
"In addition to leading guided tours, she shares her expertise and support with a broader audience by serving as an administrator for Facebook groups such as 'Padlangs in Namibië','DriveNam', 'Namibia from the Roadside,' 'Namibia Tour Guides,' and 'Travelling Namibia & Botswana.' Here, she actively engages with tourists, providing them with valuable advice on travel, safety and other tourism-related topics."
Washinana was honoured for his commitment to guiding.
"In one instance, he accompanied two cycling guests on a journey from Cape Town to Nepal. Matheus not only guided them but also provided invaluable advice for a safe route through the Buitepos border, considering wildlife and potential challenges. When he encountered them again weeks later, exhausted and weary, Matheus selflessly provided them with essentials, demonstrating genuine hospitality and care."
