July occupancy overtakes 2019 numbers

In July of this year, accommodation establishments in Namibia recorded an overall occupancy rate of 60.98%, surpassing the 59.6% recorded in July 2019.The year 2019 is considered the last pre-pandemic year for tourism, with the CEO of the Hospitality Association of Namibia noting that July marks the beginning of the traditional high season for Namibia&#039;s tourism sector.The figures for July of this year are 10% higher than those for 2022, when an occupancy rate of 51.02% was recorded. In 2020, the occupancy rate stood at a low 11.4%."All along, the high season of this year, starting in July, had promised to be a very good one – with the expectation that by the end of this year, Namibia&#039;s tourism industry could be fully recovered to pre-pandemic levels," said Paetzold.Visitor nationalities Meanwhile, 30.61% of guests originated from the German-speaking countries of Germany, Austria and Switzerland; the Benelux countries constituted over 8.6% of all visitors; and both France and Italy also proved valuable source markets, with 7.11% and 4.31%, respectively.Visitors from the USA and Canada made up 4.68% of all visitors to establishments in July.Local tourists constituted 16.8% of visitors to accommodation facilities, while South Africans took up 9.8%.Steady increase The tourism ministry recently announced that Namibia recorded 539 601 foreign arrivals in 2022, a significant increase of 99.4% from the 270 644 in the previous yearThe number of tourists who visited Namibia increased to 461 027 in 2022, up 98.1% from the previous year’s 232 756 visitors. This figure indicates a 28.9% recovery level towards the 2019 tourist arrival statistics.The largest number of tourist visitors in 2022 came from South Africa (116 897), Angola (82 199), Germany (62 691), Zambia (25 041), and Botswana (19 761).
