Airport passenger volumes decline in June

Namibia recorded 89 292 passenger arrivals and departures at airports nationwide in June, down from 94 729 in May but slightly higher than the 88 091 passengers reported in June 2024.

According to the Namibia Statistics Agency (NSA), the Passenger Movement Composite Index, which tracks international, regional, and domestic passenger flows at all airports, fell by 5.7% in June, following a 7.5% contraction in May.

On a year-on-year basis, however, the index rose by 1.4%.

Hosea Kutako International Airport remained the main hub for passenger traffic, accounting for 84.3% of total traffic in June, followed by Walvis Bay Airport with 8% and Eros Airport with 4.4%.

The remaining airports each accounted for between 2.5% and 0.03% of passenger traffic.

Airport arrivals and departures

At Eros Airport, the Arrivals Index fell by 7.1% in June compared with the previous month, following a sharper 20.3% decline in May. On a year-on-year basis, arrivals dropped by 30.6%.

The Departures Index at Eros Airport contracted by 24% in June, after a 9.9% reduction in May, and fell 38% on a yearly basis.

Meanwhile, the Arrivals Index for Hosea Kutako International Airport in June this year increased by 0.5% on a monthly basis, compared to a 12.3% decline recorded in May.

On a year-on-year basis, the index rose by 9.4%.

The NSA said that the Departures Index for Hosea Kutako International Airport declined by 12.1% in June, contrasting with a 6.7% increase recorded in May.

Nonetheless, the index registered a 2.4% year-on-year increase.

In June, the Arrivals Index for Walvis Bay Airport increased by 3.7% on a month-to-month basis, reversing the 27.5% decline recorded in May.

However, on a year-on-year basis, the index decreased by 5.5%.

The Departures Index for Walvis Bay Airport in June fell by 10.1% month-on-month, following a 17.9% reduction recorded in May. Additionally, the index declined by 2.2% year-on-year.
