Top Cheri releases ‘Running’ music video
Namibian artist Top Cheri is ushering in a powerful new chapter with the recent release of the 'Running' music video, a track that challenges the culture of competition within friendships and calls for unity.
Although the song was first released in December 2025 as part of her album ‘I Am Monika’, it has gained renewed momentum following the 18 April release of the music video.
Top Cheri told tjil this week that 'Running' explores how friends compete with one another, adding that “there is no reason to run a race against your friends”.
At its core, 'Running' is about the value of friendship, she added.
“True friendships are not about competing; it’s about completing each other and helping each other, not running a race,” Top Cheri said.
While she hinted at a deeper personal inspiration behind the track, she chose not to elaborate.
“I will need a double page if I start by telling you about the real inspiration behind the song.”
Scene, action!
The track features Kachazi and came together through a simple but effective creative process.
"The producer produced the beat, I started writing and asked Kachazi to jump on it,” she said.
She added that there were no real obstacles during production.
Beyond the music, the visuals for 'Running' play a central role in telling the story – essentially a celebration of the "aesthetics, fashion and beauty of the North", Top Cheri explained.
When it came to directing, Top Cheri trusted her team’s vision.
“My manager is a director, so respectfully I let her cook.” Reflecting on the filming experience, she said: “The entire production process was one for the books.”
A new chapter
For Top Cheri, 'Running' represents clear artistic growth.
“It shows maturity in my storytelling, my sound, and my willingness to be more open with my audience,” she shared.
'Running' also marks a period of transition and elevation, as she steps into a space where she is more intentional about her artistry and the message it carries.
The response from listeners has been encouraging.
“The response has been amazing. People are connecting with it and the comments are positive,” Top Cheri said.
Behind the scenes, the release was carefully planned.
“We focused on building anticipation, strong visual storytelling, and making sure the release reached both my core audience and new listeners.”
She also emphasised the importance of visuals in today’s music industry.
“Visuals help people connect with the music beyond just sound. They bring the story to life and define your identity as an artist.”
Looking ahead, she hinted at what’s next.
"Big projects are coming. There’s a lot coming, actually: more music, more visuals, and live performances. This is just the beginning of a new phase.”
