FNB Schools Mountain Bike League aims for record participation
Bikers raring to go
The Schools MTB League has been operating for several years with participation at the Windhoek races going from 50 riders a race to an average of 160 children per race.
The inaugural fixture for 2023 of the FNB Schools Mountain Bike League will be hosted this Saturday at IJG Trails.
“The league is aimed at growing cycling as a sport in Namibia” says Bronwen Chase, FNB Schools Mountain Bike League Committee member “We host an annual series of races with fun racetracks designed to encourage the riders.”
The League has also expanded to new Regions during 2022, hosting races at the Coast and in the South, in Stampriet.
Over the past two years, the FNB Schools MTB League Committee has partnered with PAY (Physically Active Youth) to enable children from more marginalized communities in Windhoek to also take part in the sport.
In 2021, the League Committee, together with FNB Namibia, provided sponsorship for 10 bicycles, bicycle spares, cycling kit and shoes, as well as race entries.
“We’ve continued the partnership by sponsoring race entries, transport, and food per event in 2022 for the PAY team.” Explains Chase.
“In addition, we organized the sponsorship of 6 additional bicycles, thanks to our partner clubs Windhoek Pedal Power and Rock n Rut, to enable the full team of 15 riders access to bicycles for this league and other races.”
For 2023, the League will continue the partnership with PAY, providing again for race entries, transport and food as well as providing new sports clothes for the young riders to participate in.
The PAY High School Team won the High School League trophy in 2021 and one of the PAY team who has taken part in the FNB School MTB League is now cycling with a professional team in Europe!
The league also sent an invitational team to take part in the Gauteng Regional Finals in 2022, coming away with 7 medals (5 Gold and 2 Silver) from a team of just 10 riders.
