Grootfontein takes premier league lead
Club rugby
Due to the death of Rehoboth Rugby Club player Cameron McNab in a car crash, Rehoboth's scheduled match against FNB Wanderers was indefinitely postponed.
A moment of silence was held before the kick-off of Saturday’s three NRU premier league matches that went ahead following the death of FNB Rehoboth Rugby Club player Cameron McNab in a car crash earlier in the day.
McNab, usually prominent as a ball-carrying number 8, made an impact since moving through the ranks of Dr Lemmer High School, the Namibia U/18 Craven Week side, Namibia U/20 and the club sides of FNB Unam and FNB Rehoboth.
Due to the unforeseen tragedy, Rehoboth’s scheduled match against FNB Wanderers was indefinitely postponed.
• On the playing field, the match at Walvis Bay delivered a significant upset as Unam was stopped in their tracks 20-5 by FNB Kudus. See the report by Otis Daniels on page 3 of Sport Wrap.
• The latter result contributed to FNB Grootfontein moving into first position on the points table, with a 48-16 maximum bonus points win over FNB Reho Falcon at Rehoboth on Saturday.
The visitors from the north scored eight tries – by fullback Irongwa Atshivudhi (2), wings Luis Talaya and Ian Malan, centre Louis Grobbelaar, scrumhalf Willem Enslin, hooker and captain Wikus Jacobs and Nr 8 Johan Luttig. The kicking contribution of flyhalf Ronald Deck came to four conversions.
Reho Falcon flyhalf Franklin Busch and Grootfontein replacement back each spent ten minutes in the sinbin.
• In Khomasdal, FNB Western Suburbs came back in convincing fashion from the previous weekend’s loss at Unam, by beating Trustco United 38-15.
Suburbs led 24-3 at halftime, with their fitness and skilled backline contributing to the win.
Scrumhalf AJ Kearns rounded off three of their five tries – including the first two of the match after 17 and 26 minutes, followed by a 69th-minute end-to-end counterattacking run. Flanker Dhale Cloete and wing and captain Gino Wilson were the other try scorers for the winners, while Bronwin Willemse at flyhalf landed two conversions and a penalty and his replacement Justin Nel two penalties.
United replied with two tries by left wing Doctor Andreas, as well as a penalty and conversion by flyhalf Chris Arries.
The 2019 league-winning coach Robbie Dickson pointed out that the average age of the United team is barely over 22, but that he remains confident they will launch a strong campaign this year.
