The eighth annual Desert Sports Festival (DSF) took place at the Walvis Bay Private High School (WBPHS) sports field from 23 to 26 March.
The DSF provided an opportunity for players to compete and enjoy themselves while building friendships amongst visiting schools.
The festival, which was established in 2014, aims to promote and develop rugby, hockey, netball and archery while showcasing genuine Namibian hospitality and fostering sound relationships – all while instilling good sportsmanship amongst participants, team management and parents.
The head of the school's sports department and main organiser of the festival, Henry Kemp, shared some of the achievements of the festival over the past five years.
“We have seen the number of participants grow as more schools and more age groups are entering. Even schools from South Africa regularly participate.
“With Covid-19, South African schools did not take part in the past two years, however, there is still a lot of interest from them and from Zimbabwe. They are planning to attend in 2023, depending on the global situation with regards to the virus,” Kemp added.
The festival was under the management of Wynand Moolman in 2014 and 2015, while Henjan van der Hyde took over from 2016 to 2019, followed by Kemp from 2021 to date.
Van der Hyde, the principal of WBPHS, encouraged and wished every school and player who participated well. “Remember to ensure discipline and enjoy every moment,” he said.

New sponsor
This year’s festival also boasts a new sponsor: Indongo Toyota. Miranda Bosman, the dealer principle of Indongo Toyota Walvis Bay, shared her excitement at being part of the event, saying the festival is a great platform to be involved with as it has to do with each and every child’s future. The dealership also provided goodie bags to each participating learner.
Indongo Toyota’s involvement with the festival is not just to putting its name out there, she said. “Indongo Toyota stands for integrity and we are aiming towards the same goal with the school, which is investing in every child's future."
