Tigers FC car crash raises safety concerns
Tigers Football Club chairman Nelson Akwenye says a car accident involving club personnel highlights the risks that double-header matches can pose to the league.
This comes after several team members were involved in a car accident early yesterday morning while en route to Windhoek following their Debmarine Namibia Premiership matches played in the northern part of the country.
"Yes, this can be a result of the double headers because the team had to play in Otjiwarongo and in Oshakati on the same weekend.
"After the match in Oshakati on Sunday, they had to drive back through the night, which is already a risk factor.
"At this moment, we just hope things can get better as far as these double headers are concerned," Akwenye said.
The accident occurred about 90 kilometres from Okahandja.
Stable condition
Tangeni Shipahu, Shane van Wyk, Lleyton Goliath, medic Julia Alweendo, goalkeeper coach Tiro Thlabanelo, team manager Heikke Amashisha and coach Protash Kabwe were all in the vehicle.
"All are in stable condition and on their way to Windhoek, except for Lleyton Goliath, who is being monitored closely, having been airlifted to Windhoek earlier," Akwenye said.
Akwenye said the airlifted player was receiving medical attention in Windhoek, and the club had to wait for the doctors to confirm the seriousness of the injury.
"Team medic Julia Alweendo also had a few checks done on her upon arriving in Windhoek, and we expect her to be fine.
"Let us all keep the injured player and all in our prayers."
The club lost 2-0 against Mighty Gunners in Otjiwarongo on Saturday before playing a 1-1 stalemate against Echoke Chula Chula FC on Sunday at Oshakati.
