Sundowns veteran signs new deal
SuperSportKickOff.com confirmed that Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Kennedy Mweene will be staying on at the club to complete a decade’s service after putting pen to paper on a new deal.
Mweene – who turns 38 this year – has been a reliable pair of hands whenever brought to do duty with seven clean sheets in the 11 games he has played this season as deputy to fellow veteran Denis Onyango.
The Zambian legend joined Sundowns in July 2013 from Free State Stars where he was outstanding through the eight years he spent there. With this new deal, he could possibly go on to also top 20 years of playing professional football in South Africa.
The goalkeeper has so far spent 17 years playing in the PSL, having joined Stars in 2005, a year after Silver Stars decided against signing him when he came for trials.
The deal Mweene has agreed to will first make him join the class of selected stars to spend a decade at Chloorkop, which includes Esrom Nyandoro, Mike Manzini, Hlompho Kekana, Surprise Moriri, Isaac Shai and Daniel Mudau, amongst others.
With Sundowns keen on continuing to conquer the continent – where Mweene has loads of experience with over 100 caps for Chipolopolo – they have made sure they keep the veteran keeper on yet another deal that could stretch three years.
His first contract in 2013 was a three-year deal and he has stayed on at the club by signing further extensions.
Mweene is one of four keepers at the club along with Onyango, Reyaad Pieterse and Ricardo Goss, and remains the only footballer in South Africa to have won all prime trophies on the local scene and the continent.
