Sporty fun at beach games

The inaugural edition of the Pro Beach Games, organised and hosted by Modish Sport, took place at Long Beach between Swakopmund and Walvis Bay over the long weekend.

Despite the unexpected withdrawal of some teams at the last minute as a result of several sporting events taking place at the same time, competing teams enjoyed the sand, cool breeze, beautiful weather and sporting action.

Namport (volleyball), Benguela Petroleum Supplies (football) and Ondukua Engineering Solutions (rugby) emerged as champions of the first edition of the competition.

The outdoor event accommodated 11 teams from Swakopmund and Walvis Bay.

'We gave our best'

The football teams competed on a home and away system. Benguela Petroleum Supplies (BPS) defeated Namport (NPC) in the final. BPS captain Zahilth Katiti said he had faith in his team.

“We gave our best and I knew my team was not going to let me down.”

In the first home game, BPS defeated Namport 1-0, while the second game (away) finished 0-0.

In the volleyball competition, Namport played Coastal Vets in the final, dominating and clinched the first set 25-17.

Coastal Vets hit back and took the second set 25-23, while Namport launched well-coordinated attacks and raced to a 15-7 victory in the final set.

Namport captain Shalom Nakashindo said they have been training hard for the competition and that their victory reflects how much work they have been putting in.

Spirited display

Meanwhile, Ondukua Engineering Solutions (OES) defeated Team Lloyd 12-8 in the rugby competition, with all the points scored in the first half by OES star players Sheiton Besser and Mitchell Coetzee. Angelo Pamplin put up a spirited display for Team Lloyd.

Willibard Angula, founder of Modish Sport, said due to a low turnout, there were no cash rewards for the winners.

"We decided to play a league table format, where each team played each other twice. The event was not really what we expected but I think we did well and we can only build on this. Today’s event was just trial run; next time our games will definitely be bigger and better," he said.

The next Pro Beach Games competition is scheduled for later this year, with dates to be announced on the Modish Sport social media platforms.
