WindhoekThe council of the Namibia Rugby Union (NRU) elected Petrie Theron as the new president and Johan Diergaardt as vice-president of rugby at an extraordinary general meeting held in Windhoek on Saturday.

At the previous meeting on 23 April, council was split equally on who to elect to the two positions. As a result, the follow-up meeting was convened on 18 June to remedy the stalemate.

In a press statement, the NRU said council had resolved to act in unison and in the best interests of rugby, and to work towards its goal to unify, strengthen and grow rugby as a strong federation.

Newly elected president, Theron, said the time has come for the union to return to the values for which rugby stands: integrity, respect, honesty, good sportsmanship and trust.

“Rugby should again become the bond between players that creates and builds long-lasting relationships upon which strong influences and cooperation can be established in socio-economic circumstances in our communities and country.

“Rugby should be administered in a transparent and accountable manner to keep all stakeholders, inclusive of the rugby public, informed on the progress and position of the union,” he said.

He added that there is a responsibility to promote and protect the sport for the current and future generations to come.

“This will require dedicated and focused work which the board has all committed to,” he concluded.

The NRU board also consists of: Vice-president of governance Christian Windvogel, Hermann Rust (Khomas), Apie Oberholzer (Auas), Collin Stevens (Erongo), Steven van Wyk (Hardap), Johannes Erasmus (North), Ernest Groenewald (Namibia School Sports Rugby) and Ansley Daniels (Namibia Schools Sport Union).
